๐Ÿฅ— Getting Started with Salad: System Requirements & Setup Guide

Welcome! This guide will walk you through everything you need to get Salad running smoothly in your environment โ€” from operating system and hardware requirements to virtualization and WSL installation. Let's dig in! ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Operating System Requirements

Make sure your systems are running one of the following:

  • โœ… Windows 10 (version 2004+, Build 19041+)
  • โœ… Windows 11

๐Ÿงฐ Minimum Hardware Requirements

To ensure smooth performance with Salad, your machines should meet the following specs:

  • ๐Ÿ’พ Storage: 50 GB free space
  • ๐Ÿง  RAM: 16 GB minimum (32 GB recommended!)
  • ๐ŸŽฎ GPU: NVIDIA GPU with at least 8 GB VRAM
  • ๐ŸŒ Bandwidth: Minimum 10 Mbps download speed

โš™๏ธ Virtualization Requirements

Salad runs in a containerized environment and requires virtualization to be enabled in BIOS.

๐Ÿ” Check Virtualization Support

  1. Reboot your machine and enter BIOS (usually by pressing Del, F2, or Esc on startup).
  2. Look for Intel VT-x (Intel) or AMD-V (AMD).
  3. Ensure virtualization is enabled โœ…
  4. Save and exit BIOS.

๐Ÿง WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) Installation

Salad uses WSL to run container workloads on Windows. Here's what you need to know:

๐Ÿ“Œ Important Notes:

  • โœ… Windows Updates must be enabled
  • ๐Ÿ”’ PowerShell must not be blocked (check ggLeap security policies)
  • ๐Ÿ” A reboot is required after installation

๐Ÿงช What Happens During Salad Install?

  1. Salad checks if wuauserv (Windows Update service) is running
  2. It verifies WSL is installed or up-to-date via wsl --update
  3. Salad installs WSL if needed
  4. Reboot may be required โ€” but console visibility is hidden during install

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ง DIY: Check If WSL Is Installed

  1. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt
  2. Run:

   wsl -l -v

or

   wsl --status

If installed, youโ€™ll see your distros and WSL version. If not, youโ€™ll get a โ€œcommand not foundโ€ error.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ If WSL is Not Installed

  1. Open PowerShell as Administrator (Right-click Start > PowerShell (Admin))
  2. Run:

   wsl --install --no-distribution
  1. Wait for install to complete, then reboot your machine
