๐ฅ Getting Started with Salad: System Requirements & Setup Guide
Welcome! This guide will walk you through everything you need to get Salad running smoothly in your environment โ from operating system and hardware requirements to virtualization and WSL installation. Let's dig in! ๐ฝ๏ธ
๐ฅ๏ธ Operating System Requirements
Make sure your systems are running one of the following:
- โ Windows 10 (version 2004+, Build 19041+)
- โ Windows 11
๐งฐ Minimum Hardware Requirements
To ensure smooth performance with Salad, your machines should meet the following specs:
- ๐พ Storage: 50 GB free space
- ๐ง RAM: 16 GB minimum (32 GB recommended!)
- ๐ฎ GPU: NVIDIA GPU with at least 8 GB VRAM
- ๐ Bandwidth: Minimum 10 Mbps download speed
โ๏ธ Virtualization Requirements
Salad runs in a containerized environment and requires virtualization to be enabled in BIOS.
๐ Check Virtualization Support
- Reboot your machine and enter BIOS (usually by pressing Del, F2, or Esc on startup).
- Look for Intel VT-x (Intel) or AMD-V (AMD).
- Ensure virtualization is enabled โ

๐ง WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) Installation
Salad uses WSL to run container workloads on Windows. Here's what you need to know:
๐ Important Notes:
- โ Windows Updates must be enabled
- ๐ PowerShell must not be blocked (check ggLeap security policies)
- ๐ A reboot is required after installation
๐งช What Happens During Salad Install?
- Salad checks if
wuauserv(Windows Update service) is running - It verifies WSL is installed or up-to-date via
wsl --update - Salad installs WSL if needed
- Reboot may be required โ but console visibility is hidden during install
๐งโ๐ง DIY: Check If WSL Is Installed
- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt
- Run:
wsl -l -v
or
wsl --status
If installed, youโll see your distros and WSL version. If not, youโll get a โcommand not foundโ error.
๐ ๏ธ If WSL is Not Installed
- Open PowerShell as Administrator (Right-click Start > PowerShell (Admin))
- Run:
wsl --install --no-distribution
- Wait for install to complete, then reboot your machine
