How to Setup Wake-on-Lan (WoL)

This guide will show you how to enable Wake-on-LAN (WoL) on your computer, allowing you to remotely power it on over your network.



โœ… Prerequisite:

๐Ÿ’ป A computer that supports WoL (check your computer's or motherboard's documentation ๐Ÿ“–)



๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Wake-on-LAN (WoL) Setup by Manufacturer



๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Alienware Systems


  1. Enter BIOS: Press F2 during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Power Management.
  3. Set:


  • Deep Sleep Control โ†’ Disabled.
  • Wake on LAN โ†’ Enabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Apply changes and exit BIOS.


Note: Some Alienware models may not support WoL. If the option is unavailable, consult the system's manual or support resources.



๐Ÿ”ง ASRock Motherboards


  1. Enter BIOS: Press Del or F2 during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Advanced > ACPI Configuration.
  3. Set:


  • PCIE Devices Power On โ†’ Enabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Press F10, confirm changes.


Note: Enabling PCIE Devices Power On allows the system to be powered on via network activity through the PCI-E interface.



๐Ÿ”ง ASUS Motherboards


  1. Enter BIOS: Press Del during boot.
  2. Switch to Advanced Mode: Press F7.
  3. Navigate to: Advanced > APM Configuration.
  4. Set:


  • ErP Ready โ†’ Disabled.
  • Power On By PCI-E โ†’ Enabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Press F10, confirm changes.(ImmyBot Community, Lenovo Support)


Note: Disabling ErP Ready ensures the network adapter remains powered during shutdown or sleep states, allowing WoL to function properly.



๐Ÿ”ง Biostar Motherboards


  1. Enter BIOS: Press Del during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Advanced tab.
  3. Set:


  • ACPI / PME Wake Up from S5 โ†’ Enabled.
  • ErP Control โ†’ Disabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Press F10, confirm changes.


Note: Disabling ErP Control ensures the network adapter remains powered during shutdown or sleep states, allowing WoL to function properly.



๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Dell Desktops & Laptops


  1. Enter BIOS: Press F2 during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Power Management > Wake on LAN/WLAN.
  3. Set:


  • Wake on LAN โ†’ LAN Only or LAN with PXE Boot.
  • Deep Sleep Control โ†’ Disabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Apply changes and exit BIOS.


Note: Disabling Deep Sleep Control ensures the network adapter remains powered during shutdown or sleep states, allowing WoL to function properly.



๐Ÿ”ง MSI Motherboards


  1. Enter BIOS: Press Del during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Settings > Advanced > Wake Up Event Setup.
  3. Set:


  • Resume by PCI-E Device โ†’ Enabled.
  • ErP Ready โ†’ Disabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Press F10, confirm changes.


Note: Disabling ErP Ready ensures the network adapter remains powered during shutdown or sleep states, allowing WoL to function properly.



๐Ÿ”ง Gigabyte Motherboards


  1. Enter BIOS: Press Del during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Power Management or Advanced tab.
  3. Set:


  • PME Event Wake Up โ†’ Enabled.
  • ErP โ†’ Disabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Press F10, confirm changes.


Note: Disabling ErP ensures the network adapter remains powered during shutdown or sleep states, allowing WoL to function properly.



๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Lenovo ThinkPad/ThinkCentre


  1. Enter BIOS: Press F1 during boot.
  2. Navigate to: Config > Network.
  3. Set:


  • Wake on LAN โ†’ Enabled.
  • Deep Sleep โ†’ Disabled.
  1. Save and Exit: Apply changes and exit BIOS.


Note: WoL is typically available on Lenovo's business-class systems. Consumer models may lack this feature.



๐Ÿงช Testing Wake-on-LAN



  • Target PC must be connected via Ethernet.
  • MAC address of the target PC is needed.
  • Ensure the PC is in a sleep, hibernate, or shutdown state (not unplugged).



Note:Some computers may only support WoL from sleep mode, while others allow it from a powered-off stateTip:Check your PC or motherboard documentation as some manufacturers may require disabling certain sleep modes (e.g., S3/S4) to enable WoL.
