Replacing all ggRock Array Drives (Forklift Storage Upgrade)

This article outlines the procedure for performing a "forklift" upgrade of all drives in your ggRock array. This process involves replacing all existing array drives with new ones, requiring a complete array rebuild and image restoration.

Important Considerations:

  • Data Loss: This process will result in the complete erasure of all data on the existing drives. Ensure a complete backup of all images is performed before proceeding.
  • Downtime: The server will be offline for the duration of the upgrade, array rebuild, and image restoration. Plan accordingly.
  • Support Assistance: Contact us to have us perform the array rebuild. This step is critical for proper array configuration.

Procedure:

  1. Back Up All Images:

  • Before any hardware changes, perform a complete backup of all images stored on the ggRock array.
  • Verify the integrity of the backup to ensure no data loss occurs.
  • Store the backup in a safe location, preferably on a separate storage system.

  1. Turn Off the Server:

  • Gracefully shut down the ggRock server.
  • Ensure the server is completely powered off before proceeding.

  1. Note Old Drive Locations:

  • Carefully note the physical locations of the existing drives within the server.
  • This information can be crucial if it becomes necessary to revert to the old drives for any reason.
  • Take pictures of the drive layout.

  1. Remove Old Drives:

  • Carefully remove the old drives from the server.
  • Handle the drives with care to avoid damage.
  • Store the old drives in a safe location.

  1. Install New Drives:

  • Install the new drives into the server, ensuring they are properly seated.
  • It is best practice to keep the new drives in the same physical slots as the old drives, unless otherwise specified by support.

  1. Contact Us for Array Rebuild:

  • This is the crucial step. Contact our support team to initiate the array rebuild process.
  • Provide the necessary information, such as the number and type of new drives.
  • Our support team will remotely access the server (if accessible), or provide instruction on how to perform the array creation.
  • Do not attempt to create the array without our assistance.

  1. Restore Images from Backup:

  • Once the array rebuild is complete and verified, restore the backed-up images to the newly created array.
  • Verify the integrity of the restored images.
  • Test the ggRock system to ensure proper functionality.

Important Notes:

  • Always follow proper ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) precautions when handling server components.
  • If you are unsure about any step in this procedure, contact our support team for assistance.
  • This procedure is intended for experienced system administrators. If you are not comfortable performing these steps, please contact our support team to schedule a service appointment.

By following these steps, you can successfully perform a forklift upgrade of your ggRock array drives while minimizing the risk of data loss and downtime.
