Taking Ownership of the NVIDIA Control Panel Installation Folder

Overview


The NVIDIA Control Panel installed via the Microsoft Store is protected by the WindowsApps Trusted Installer protocol, limiting access to its folder and preventing direct modifications. Users needing administrative control over the NVIDIA Control Panel for add-on support or advanced configurations can copy its folder to a user-accessible location.

Steps to Copy NVIDIA Control Panel Folder


Step 1: Locate the NVIDIA Control Panel Folder


By default, the NVIDIA Control Panel is stored within the WindowsApps folder, which is hidden. You must first make it visible:


  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click the View tab (Windows 10) or View > Show (Windows 11).
  3. Check the box for Hidden Items to display hidden files and folders.
  4. Navigate to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps.
  5. Locate the folder containing the NVIDIA Control Panel. The folder name will look similar to:


   NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel\_56jybvy8sckqj


Step 2: Copy the Folder to a User-Accessible Location


  1. Right-click the NVIDIA Control Panel folder.
  2. Select Copy.
  3. Navigate to a folder where you have full access, such as C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\NVIDIAControlPanel.
  4. Paste the copied folder into this new location.


Step 3: Adjust Folder Permissions on the Copied Folder


Once the folder is copied to your Documents directory, you may need to take ownership to ensure full control:


  1. Right-click the copied NVIDIAControlPanel folder inside `C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents`.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Click Advanced at the bottom.
  5. In the Advanced Security Settings window, locate the Owner field and click Change.
  6. In the Select User or Group window:


  • Type your Windows username or Administrator.
  • Click Check Names (it should auto-complete with your admin account name).
  • Click OK.
  1. Back in the Advanced Security Settings window:


  • Check Replace owner on sub-containers and objects.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK on the confirmation messages and exit the properties window.
  1. If necessary, adjust permissions by granting Full Control to your user account.


Step 4: Access NVIDIA Control Panel Executable


Once copied, you can manually run or link the NVIDIA Control Panel executable:


  • Executable Location in Copied Folder:


  C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\NVIDIAControlPanel\nvcplui.exe
  • Original Parameter to Open NVIDIA Control Panel:


  shell:AppsFolder\NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel\_56jybvy8sckqj!NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel


Final Notes


  • By copying the folder instead of modifying system permissions, you minimize security risks.
  • Avoid altering any permissions beyond what is necessary to maintain security.
  • If issues arise, restoring the original NVIDIA Control Panel installation or reinstalling it from the Microsoft Store may be required.
