# Taking Ownership of the NVIDIA Control Panel Installation Folder

## Overview

The NVIDIA Control Panel installed via the Microsoft Store is protected by the WindowsApps Trusted Installer protocol, limiting access to its folder and preventing direct modifications. Users needing administrative control over the NVIDIA Control Panel for add-on support or advanced configurations can copy its folder to a user-accessible location.

|| Any actions you take are solely your responsibility. You have been warned!

## **Steps to Copy NVIDIA Control Panel Folder**

### **Step 1: Locate the NVIDIA Control Panel Folder**

By default, the NVIDIA Control Panel is stored within the WindowsApps folder, which is hidden. You must first make it visible:

1. Open **File Explorer**.
2. Click the **View** tab (Windows 10) or **View > Show** (Windows 11).
3. Check the box for **Hidden Items** to display hidden files and folders.
4. Navigate to `C:\Program Files\WindowsApps`.
5. Locate the folder containing the NVIDIA Control Panel. The folder name will look similar to:

```
   NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel_56jybvy8sckqj
```

### **Step 2: Copy the Folder to a User-Accessible Location**

1. **Right-click** the NVIDIA Control Panel folder.
2. Select **Copy**.
3. Navigate to a folder where you have full access, such as `C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\NVIDIAControlPanel`.
4. **Paste** the copied folder into this new location.

### **Step 3: Adjust Folder Permissions on the Copied Folder**

|| Once the folder is copied to your Documents directory, you may need to take ownership to ensure full control:

1. **Right-click** the copied `NVIDIAControlPanel` folder inside `C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents`.
2. Select **Properties**.
3. Click the **Security** tab.
4. Click **Advanced** at the bottom.
5. In the **Advanced Security Settings** window, locate the **Owner** field and click **Change**.
6. In the **Select User or Group** window:

* Type your Windows username or `Administrator`.
* Click **Check Names** (it should auto-complete with your admin account name).
* Click **OK**.
7. Back in the **Advanced Security Settings** window:

* Check **Replace owner on sub-containers and objects**.
* Click **Apply**.
* Click **OK** on the confirmation messages and exit the properties window.
8. If necessary, adjust permissions by granting **Full Control** to your user account.

### **Step 4: Access NVIDIA Control Panel Executable**

Once copied, you can manually run or link the NVIDIA Control Panel executable:

* **Executable Location in Copied Folder:**

```
  C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\NVIDIAControlPanel\nvcplui.exe
```
* **Original Parameter to Open NVIDIA Control Panel:**

```
  shell:AppsFolder\NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel_56jybvy8sckqj!NVIDIACorp.NVIDIAControlPanel
```

### **Final Notes**

* By copying the folder instead of modifying system permissions, you minimize security risks.
* Avoid altering any permissions beyond what is necessary to maintain security.
* If issues arise, restoring the original NVIDIA Control Panel installation or reinstalling it from the Microsoft Store may be required.
